The Care and Keeping of Antique Wicker and Rattan Outdoor Furniture

Wicker and rattan are two of the most inviting and traditional of outdoor furniture materials. They are both nostalgic yet fresh in appearance year after year with the proper amount of maintenance. They are the most fragile of outdoor furniture materials and two of the most beautiful.

Both rattan and wicker are made of wood fibers, and are therefore vulnerable to the elements. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be enjoyed or have year after year of use. It just takes some patience in maintenance.

Always remember that moisture is the biggest enemy of wicker and rattan. Most usually have either a paint or resin coating, and they are great aids in keeping the pieces dry. But if the barrier is somehow broken, moisture can do damage fairly quickly. Simple mildew can be remedied by spraying on a mixture of water with a bit of bleach in it. Don’t wipe it off. Allow it to air dry.

If there is noticeable cracking from sitting in the sun, it is time to apply a new coat of resin, varnish or paint. Apply thin coats, which keep the amount of sanding or brushing time to a minimum. Over the years, the buildup can become very thick and should be avoided.

During the winter months, these types of outdoor furniture should always be stored in a dry area. For areas where storage is impossible, the best option is to use high quality patio furniture covers. Wrap the legs and feet as well so that no moisture works its way up into the main areas of the pieces.

Owning outdoor furniture covers also comes in handy for protecting rattan and wicker from the sun. When not in use, covering them will add years to their lives. The sun is notorious for creating the cracks in paint and resins that allow moisture to get inside and do damage. This holds true for pieces used indoors in very sunny areas as well.

The older the pieces of rattan or wicker furniture, the more value it is likely to have. There is a certain amount of attrition due to neglect so truly vintage pieces become rarer all the time. The better taken care of it is the more valuable it becomes.

Many home owners, who live in areas where there is considerable rain or weather during the summer months relegate rattan and wicker to porches. It not only offers shelter but saves on using covers as often, and is a terrific way to decorate a comfortable and enticing area of the home.

Vintage rattan and wicker do require more maintenance than many other types of outdoor furniture. But, the rewards are many and the style can’t be beat. For those who want the look but not the maintenance, the new versions of these materials are pre-coated with resin and offer much more durability but don’t expect the same good looks eit
