How to write a children’s book?
I’m trying to write a “children’s story” version of a graphic story about a burned puppy found in my city. We want it to tell the story of the pup and also be educational. I’ve never written a story for kids before and I have no idea how to go about it.
Should I weave the educational material (about how to properly care for dogs, etc) in with the story of the pup, or should I tell the puppy’s story in the beginning and end the little book with some educational material?
Also, what are reading levels? The shelter’s director told me to write it between levels 2 and 3, but I can’t find any examples of materials from reading levels online.
Please help!
It all boils down to the illustration. That is what the children will remember the most. Find a way to incorporate the good in people’s hearts when they found the puppy. I am still shocked that this might be a book, may be too sad for kids to handle. But if it is meant to educate, then I’m all for it. You’ll also need to set up a format for the text. Are you going to have it rhyme or is it going to be in standard paragraph form. Kids can memorize a rhyme, it is like a song or poem. Rhyming may make the book seem happier than the initial “burnt puppy” theme.
I would set it up into stages by character. For example – The first section will be about the birds who saw the puppy. Chirping away. The chirping alerted the young boy, who found the puppy. The boy told his parents about the puppy. The parents told the police…so on, so forth.
You should make the focus be about telling a trusted adult anytime you find something like that.
