Man And Wife Work On Art
For a portrait artist, the difficulty lies in capturing single emotions, moods, and moments. One brave, self taught artist from Marion thrives in portraiture. Different faces fill one of his montages, those of an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends, and he calls this work “Faces”. He begins by grabbing photos from videos, which yields unexpected expressions. Only people who touched his life during the year and a half he spent painting the montage were included. Aside from the montage, he has individual portraits of the lead singer from Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast, and a songwriter. He commonly uses pencil, graphite, and charcoal in his work. He decided to add to his abilities by learning to use conte crayon and colored pencils. His wife originally comes from Kobe, Japan, and their wedding photo is what he used for his first colored pencil drawing. He mixed and matched American and Japanese wood block print styles. Both personal and Japanese symbols were layered onto the base, their wedding photograph taken at City Hall in December 1996. Featured in the drawing but not in the actual wedding is their trio of cats. He used a mask from Japanese opera, believed to protect against evil spirits, as the face of one of the cats. In order to attract good luck, he drew the second cat in the position of luck. He dressed himself and his wife in kimonos in the drawing. With her matriarchal symbol, a flower called the kikyo, he decorated his wife. He drew a gingko tree outside the room, behind the vertical blinds, past the third cat. The link to the gingko, a sing of longevity, is a tree the artist once saw at the University of Iowa. To read other paintings articles make sure to visit oil painting artists hand painted. The first partner project the couple completed was the 1997 drawing. His wife was in charge of idea generation and evaluation. The drawing has high sentimental value for them, said the wife. The artist says he would like to expand into landscapes, but he will always add people, as they are his favorite pieces to draw. He has never had his own exhibit, but his work has been published, four inside and one cover, in a book. It was a staff member who presented his work to the book editor. The editor needed to express his admiration of the artist’s technique and emailed him. He has come a long way from his childhood drawings of action heroes and rock stars. His skills are so refined that he can portray on paper any image or impression. For him, it starts with a clean mental image, which he improves with additions or changes.
